Surgical Weight Loss (Bariatric Program)
Sutter Roseville Medical Center
Patients who are more than 100 pounds over their ideal weight or who have a body mass index greater than 40 may benefit from this innovative approach to weight loss. Bariatric surgery, also known as gastric-bypass surgery, reduces the amount of food the stomach can take in and contain, helping patients eat less and gradually lose excess weight.
As a designated Center of Excellence from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Sutter Bariatric Center at Sutter Roseville Medical Center is fully equipped to provide complete care during and after surgery. More than 1,700 surgeries have been performed since 2001.
Our Sutter Bariatric Center offers patients a skilled and highly experienced team that cares for patients at every step of their journey. Care begins by determining if surgery is the right choice and continues through education and support designed to ensure long-term success. Surgery is performed by a skilled laparoscopic surgeon who has received extensive training in gastric bypass surgery.
There are two types of surgery performed:
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery can be performed as either an open or laparoscopic procedure. Laparoscopy is considered a better option for many patients because it is less invasive, typically requires only a two-day hospital stay, and the recovery time is shorter.
Adjustable Gastric Banding. This procedure is the least invasive. It involves placing an adjustable silicone band around the top of the part of the stomach. The band may be adjusted after surgery to promote maximum weight loss without side effects. Patients typically stay in the hospital only overnight and in many cases, can go home the same day of the procedure.
In addition to highly trained surgical and nursing staff, patients receive individual care from dieticians and psychologists who understand the particular issues and challenges bariatric patients face. There are also monthly support groups available.
